Soul Setting
This just might be the hundredth article you’ve read about mindset. With social media there is no shortage of advice and quick fixes on how to hack your mind, motivate your workout or read ten books in a week. But what most of this advice overlooks, and what I feel is probably the most important, is something I like to call Soulset.
I discovered Soulset after a particularly challenging time in my life. I had moved eight times in eight years, searching and craving for something more, but I didn’t have any idea of how to get it. I had colleagues telling me to “stop running and settle down,” and “you will never be happy” ran through my veins like nails on a chalkboard. But my soul knew that something grander existed. After starting a meditation practice, I began to engage my soul. I gave it space so I could hear it, knowing what I felt was true and valid. No longer only listening to the routine of the mind, I was being guided by my inner compass.
Questions began to surface as I consumed ways to better my practice. I asked myself, what is the best way to grow? Is it productivity, checking all the “to do” boxes off the list? Is it more education, more work hours, or goal setting that needs to get done? Is it tweaking or fine-tuning the family schedule to honor work/life harmony? How do Mindset and Soulset coalesce? If we are consumed in our thoughts and our mind, are we in tune with our hearts?
What makes us live from a Mindset? The non-trust we have in ourselves, the day-to-day grind and to-do lists. The thinking instead of feeling. What we “should” do versus what is the longing of our soul. The safety net versus the faith in our heart's desire. What makes us live from a Soulset? The trust we have in the Universe, following our intuition and our inner compass of awareness. The non-tangible faith that we will be supported. I love the quote, “What if I fall? Oh, but my darling, what if you fly?”
Mindset can often be deceptive because that is where the ego/fear potentially take over. We find ourselves engaged in logic, making progress, feeling successful—except that when we get to the end of the project, we suddenly find that we are not fulfilled. It’s like going down a path for years only to find out you were supposed to make a right turn instead of a left.
So, what is Soulset? Let me first explain what Soulset is not. It’s not longer hours. It’s not being perfectly efficient. It’s not making bigger sacrifices. It’s not busy-ness. It’s not more technology or apps. It’s not a quick fix. It’s not about how much money can be made quickly or whether you feel like you’re winning. It’s not about any finding of these things through logic, but the opposite—it’s about finding all these things through Love, through those things that call to your heart.
Soulset is driven by emotions, knowing, awareness, truth, and consciousness. Soulset is the relationship between all things, time and energy, the totality of consciousness because we are connecting to our Divine Self. Even this leaves out an important element: the value of your Soul. In other words, is your Soul full,
is it filled up? Is it moving closer towards what really is important in life? It does not matter how productive we feel if it hasn’t moved us closer to the things we value most in our lives.
It may sound simple to be in Soulset, but stop and pause for a moment. Take a look at your current situation and evaluate the things that are distracting you from what matters most.
A boss, a packed schedule, an unhealthy relationship, a bad habit, debt, the need for more? Our attention is constantly diverted from our hearts to our minds. So how do we find our zone in Soulsetting that results in moving our hearts closer to purpose? Soulsetting is based on two principles. If you start moving into the heart without these two foundations in place, you might feel like you are spinning your wheels without moving towards joy, peace, and abundance.
Foundation One - Know Thy Self (Compassion)
To know who you are, you need a sense of self-awareness, and the best way to achieve this is through meditation. In order to generate self-awareness, you need to create stillness and silence. Knowing the self is the key to knowing how you align with those around you and the choices you make.
When you understand how you connect and align with others, you gain the strength and courage to take charge of your life. You begin listening to your heart’s desire as opposed to the opinion of others. You begin honoring the light within instead of the voices of everyone else. As I stated above, I kept moving a few more times because I knew I was getting closer to my destination, not further from it.
When you know yourself, it is much easier to say no so that you have the space to say “Hell Yeah!” to something important. When you know yourself, you will better understand your energy and those around you.
Foundation 2 - Know What You Want (Intention)
After developing an understanding of who you are, next comes determining where you want to go—or in other words, setting your intention. This probably seems easier than knowing who you are, but it can be very misleading because the world is really good at telling you where you should go.
Not only do humans get stuck playing the comparison game, we are the only ones playing the “I’m better than you” game. We think we have to be everything, do everything, and get a major paycheck to be a success. But if we’re going to set ourselves up for real success, we’re going to have to understand how we define success in a Soulset process. The point is that it’s not rational or possible to have everything in life despite what the ego will tell you. What is your definition of success? What is the outcome you desire? Instead of thinking about it, move into your heart center and begin to call forth your feelings of what success feels like instead of what it looks like. Knowing who you are and what you desire will help you uncover the direction the Universe is encouraging you to go. We can effectively walk the path if we listen and follow our Souls. It is only then that we will be able to see clearly what needs to be done to get us closer to what fills us up.
So now it’s your turn. What do you need to work on? Life is a journey, not a destination. It’s a path of desire, not a race to the finish line. We can only be in Soulset when we let go of the end and focus on how the journey will cultivate and nourish our experiences. What you become in the process is far better than what you achieve. Your foundation is the key to creating a life of joy, peace, and abundance. The time is now. I invite you to sit in stillness and ignite your Soulset.
