Q and A with Erin Caudell - Starting a business in downtown Flint

Q. Why did you decide to start The Local Grocer?

The Local Grocer’s M.L. King Avenue location is an expansion of our store inside the Flint Farmers’ Market. Our farm in Beecher supplies much of the produce we sell. We work with other small farmers that also share our production values and growing practices. Our produce is grown using all-natural farming methods, without the use of synthetic pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. We believe that the Flint community deserves a grocery store that supports making healthier food choices and supports their local economy. We knew that this would be best accomplished by creating a store that specializes in selling products made by Michigan companies. Our work prior to farming and running a grocery store was focused on connecting with others in the community to strengthen and enhance our local food system. Opening an all-Michigan, all natural grocery store was our logical next step.

Q. What kind of challenges have you faced so far with the business as you’ve grown? What has the response from customers been like to the new store?

Exclusively carrying products from Michigan companies presents some very interesting challenges. It is a selling point for those looking to reinvest in their community using their grocery budget. Sometimes it’s a challenge to explain why we don’t have fresh tomatoes all year round. There are a few national brands made with all-natural ingredients, in Michigan. Most of what we sell is created by small companies or individuals that are not as well known. Once people experience the improved taste and quality found in locally made and goods they are very willing to switch to the local choices we offer.

Capitalizing a new endeavor was our most obvious challenge. Our deepest gratitude goes out to everyone in Flint and Genesee County, and elsewhere, who in just 25 days contributed over $31,000 to help with our start-up costs via a Kickstarter campaign in late 2015. The Local Grocer is the kind of place where people with concerns about what they consume can feel safe shopping, eating and asking questions about their food. We also have a lots organic, vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Q. Are you optimistic about Flint’s future?

Yes! We love Flint! We live in a city with a thriving music, art and cultural scene, a fantastic farmers’ market, over 350 food gardens, great universities and strong, resilient, intelligent, dedicated people.
